Mirror Match Postmortem
I'm really not a coder. If I never had to write a line of code again I would not be upset. Yet, I managed to accomplish quite a bit and learn a lot in the process. For example, I had never heard of a signal bus pattern before starting this project, and now I know how to implement one. I had never worked with raycasts before, and I've never tried codebashing before. It almost feels miraculous that I got this game to work at all, but I realize it was all because I made a proper effort. In that way, I'm very proud of myself, especially considering the rocky start I had with this project.
I think the systems of the game function very well. It's got some nice gamefeel, and for the most part people who have tried the game agree. It would be relatively simple to expand the game with new mechanics, if I ever felt like it.
But on that note, I am still not very happy with the actual content of the game. I'm not sure if it's just because my brain is not very puzzle oriented, but I really hit a wall when it came to designing the levels. Honestly, after 6 boards I am completely tapped for ideas. Level 4 is really the only one that I think has any kind of cleverness to it, and I feel like I only came up with it on a fluke. I tried to create a one-way passage tile in an attempt to spice things up, but I don't think it really accomplishes anything. It would be really cool to work with someone who actually has good puzzle ideas to make this game more fun.
All in all, this project was a great learning experience. Even if my puzzles are a bit lackluster, I gained a lot of confidence in my ability to actually develop a functioning game.
Now, onto the next big thing.
